How to read the specs

Not sure what the numbers mean for your garment or furnishing? A quick guide.

GSM: Grams per square metre — how heavy the cloth is.Under 150 is light (shirts, dresses, linings). 150–250 is medium (trousers, jackets, cushions). Above 250 is heavy (workwear, upholstery, curtains that need to hang straight).
Width: How wide the fabric is on the roll, in centimetres.Most garment cloth is 140–150 cm. Wide widths (240 cm and up) let a curtain or bedsheet be cut without a seam. Always plan your marker on the usable width.
Construction: Threads per inch — warp × weft, e.g. 108 × 56.Higher numbers mean a denser, smoother, more stable cloth; lower numbers mean an open, airy weave. For corduroy it is the wale count; for knits it is not quoted.
Composition: What the fibre is made of, as a percentage.Cotton breathes and takes dye evenly. Linen is cooler and creases. Polyester adds strength and crease recovery. A few percent of spandex or Lycra gives stretch.
Finish: The treatment given after weaving or dyeing.Enzyme or bio-polished finishes feel soft from day one. Mercerised cloth holds deep shades and a slight sheen. Loom-state / greige means untreated — ready for your own dye house. RFD is bleached and prepared for dyeing.
Roll length: Approximate metres on one roll.Orders are usually placed by the roll. If you need less, ask — cut lengths are possible on most articles.
Shades: How many colours this article is held in.The swatches show a few; the count is the full range. Samples are free — ask for the shade card before you commit a style.
