Higher numbers mean a denser, smoother, more stable cloth; lower numbers mean an open, airy weave. For corduroy it is the wale count; for knits it is not quoted.

Composition
What the fibre is made of, as a percentage.
Cotton breathes and takes dye evenly. Linen is cooler and creases. Polyester adds strength and crease recovery. A few percent of spandex or Lycra gives stretch.

Finish
The treatment given after weaving or dyeing.
Enzyme or bio-polished finishes feel soft from day one. Mercerised cloth holds deep shades and a slight sheen. Loom-state / greige means untreated, ready for your own dye house. RFD is bleached and prepared for dyeing.
